Your Exchange is Lending Your Bitcoin | River x Bitcoin Advisory
Your exchange is lending out your Bitcoin.
You think you own Bitcoin.
You might just own a promise.
How it works
You deposit Bitcoin on an exchange. You see a balance on your screen.
But behind the scenes, many exchanges take your Bitcoin and lend it out to traders, hedge funds, or use it as collateral for their own bets.
You see a number. They hold an IOU.
This isn't hypothetical.
In every case, customers thought they owned Bitcoin.
They owned a line in a database.
The pattern
Every exchange that collapsed was doing the same thing: taking your deposits and putting them to work for their own profit.
No disclosure
No permission
You earned nothing. They took all the risk.
You took all the loss.
“But my exchange is different”
Maybe. But how do you know?
Most exchanges don't publish proof that they actually hold what they owe you.
They ask you to trust them.
That's the exact same pitch banks have been giving for 300 years. And banks are legally allowed to lend your deposits. At least they're honest about it.
What to look for:
Proof of Reserves
A real proof of reserves lets you independently verify that the exchange holds enough Bitcoin to cover every customer balance.
If your exchange doesn't offer this, ask yourself why.
Full reserve vs. fractional reserve
Full Reserve
✓ They hold 100% of your Bitcoin
✓ Nothing lent
✓ Nothing rehypothecated
✓ Your coins sit in cold storage waiting for you
Fractional Reserve
✗ They hold some, lend the rest
✗ Hope everyone doesn't withdraw at once
Sound familiar?
That's how banks work.
It's also how FTX worked.
The uncomfortable question
Open your exchange app right now.
Can you find a proof of reserves page?
Can you verify your specific balance is backed?
If the answer is no, you're trusting a company with your money based on nothing but a logo and a Terms of Service nobody reads.
You have two options
Self-custody
Your keys, your coins. Nobody can lend what they don't hold.
Use an exchange that proves full reserves
Verifiable, auditable, no lending.
Both are better than hoping your exchange isn't the next FTX.

“If you can't verify it,
you don't own it.”
River offers 100% full reserves and
proof you can verify yourself.
